The most interesting thing the observatory has to offer is undoubtedly the public observations of the day and night sky, which take place in clear weather all year round. Look through the huge telescope and observe the Sun, Moon and other celestial objects like professional astronomers! Located in the centre of Prague, the observatory offers a wonderful educational experience for science-minded adults and children.

Tips
  • Opening hours vary throughout the year to allow daytime and night-sky observations. Please check the current opening hours on the official website before your visit.
  • From October to May, the observatory is closed on Mondays, except on selected public holidays and special events.
  • In clear weather, visitors can observe the Sun during the day and the night sky through the observatory's large telescopes.

The Štefánik Observatory is located in the very heart of Prague, in Petřin's park at the Hunger Wall - which was built during the reign of Charles IV in the 14th century. It is named after a Slovak astronomer Milan Rastislav Štefánik.

The main telescopes of the observatory are a double Zeiss astrograph named after the Viennese selenographer Rudolf König, which is placed in the main dome (bought in 1928), and a mirror Maksutov-Cassegrain installed in the western dome in 1976. Nowadays, the observatory primarily specializes in popularization of astronomy and related natural sciences. The most exciting thing it can offer will of course be public day & night observations of the sky during the whole year.
